iris: evening color

“Whether the flower or the color is the focus I do not know. I do know the flower is painted large to convey my experience with the flower – and what is my experience if it is not the color?"  -Georgia O'Keeffe

I am not a professional photographer, but now and then I feel like I get one right. It took me awhile to realize it all had to do with lighting - not a fancy camera or a perfect subject.  I photographed these wild iris one evening while rowing my fly-fishing husband around on a lake near Grand Marais, MN.

And subject matter does not always apply when taking photos in the evening. It can be anything -  beauty is in the color, the drama, the moment.  We artists try to capture this moment in our paintings. Evening porch sitters and after-dinner-walkers may not consciously realize why they are out right then, but something inside them may know that this is the time for a more clear and vibrant view of the horizon, the mind's eye.

Color is all around us, affecting us without our realization. It helps to be more aware of color - to understand how color affects your emotions, your memories.  Choosing the right color palette for your kitchen, your wedding flowers, your wardrobe - its more than just fashion - its location, season, history, emotional memory. Children are asked early on: “what is your favorite color?” Well, what is your favorite color today? why?
