Collagraph Monoprints

These collagraph monoprints use a collaged plate to achieve beautiful texture, and if you see them in person you want to touch them. They are original prints, one-of-a-kind. Real leaves are used as stencils, as the layers of color are built up on top of each other.

There is a wonderful little restaurant in Viroqua Wisconsin called The Driftless Cafe. They have amazing, beautiful food; plus, they love local artists. So, this month of May they will be showing my work. I went to set up the show on Sunday with my little helper Halene. After a few cinnamon rolls and some left-over quiche (oh my) we got everything in place. It looks great in that space and I am so happy to be there.

The theme of the show is fish, feathers, and flowers - and though you may want to spend all of your free time outside in the spring wonder, the work here celebrates just that. Also, Nathan is showing off some of his woodblock prints. His "Emerging Caddis" and "Hex Spinner Fall"(as seen below) go well with all the other woodblock prints of trout and the series of brown trout collagraph prints. Prices range from $35 to $700.

Remember the murders of crows outside the school of design building at Iowa State - walking wide circles to stay out of their shadows - those poor art students fall dead on the sidewalks - exhausted, starving, or too much turpentine - the crows know where to wait. Fresh Air will be a wonderful example of the diversity and range of this well-established group.

working faster. when the palette is so large and your arms have to reach and you can't sit down here. real leaves printed on. plus graphite as texture. wouldn't frame this one. just have it as a warm window on a large wall.

Through the Oaks

Through the Oaks began last fall on a hike at Martens Access in Cherokee Iowa. Oaks are nice. Feels like they have history and stories. These are monotypes. Each is an original, printed on Rives BFK archival paper. Framed - $336 each.

Its best to embrace the season you're in. But here I am forcing tulip bulbs in my kitchen and printing bulbs in the studio in January. At times I am the little bird waiting patiently, anticipating the events symbolizing spring. I know those bulbs under the snow and ground are patiently waiting with me - preparing.

On moving to our new home one of the nicest things, and one of the things I had been missing in Duluth, is getting to see the sunset. Now mind, Duluth has some amazing "backward sunsets", as we liked to call them, but the the hill blocks the vibrant reds, pinks, oranges. Now I can go down to the river, walk along the spillway and experience the sun setting pretty easily. It still doesn't compare to an Iowa prairie sunset, but it is enough for me right now.

I took some photos at sunset of some of the plant life down by the spillway. This plant doesn't usually have pink tones in it, but lighting can change anything. This is going to be one part of a triptych - a three part painting. On choosing a subject, what grabs you? Lately for me: color, texture, line - and as it gets colder, the contrast of dark and light, like snow on oak leaves, like these short bright days and long, getting even longer, nights.

Fritillaria meleagris Fritillary, Checkered Daffodil, Frog-cup, Guinea-hen Flower, Leper Lily, Snake's Head, Snake's Head Fritillary is a Fritillary, a flower from the family Liliaceae.

So, I stopped working at the flowershop and I sold my house with the garden - and now I am sort of in a stage of missing real flowers. I painted these Fritillaria right after we moved.

October's Luxury

Autumn. October. Is it half over already? October could be the very best month. Walking on the Hixon Forest trail today I picked up a ridiculous amount of oak, cherry, and maple leaves. My daughter loves leaves and rocks and dirt and birds flying and sticks; which has me examining what luxury is to me. It is what you make it. Is it raspberries, sitting in the sunshine, reading a novel, traveling, doing something you love?

I'm starting this blog as a way to share what is going on in my creative life right now. There are a lot of non-fun/non-creative parts too - I'll put that anxiety ridden, stressful part into some other outlet.

I have a lot of projects in motion in the studio right now. A few paintings, some printing plates being prepped, a large sketchpad of drawings from the Green Bay Street Studio's figure drawing nights.

And recently, framed and looking very nice in their new little homes, are these prints.
